Joshua Karlip, Assistant Professor, Yeshiva University In both the ghettos of Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe and in the Americas, Yiddishist intellectuals reacted to the unfolding genocide by sanctifying the entirety of the East European Jewish experience, both religious and secular. This lecture analyzes this cultural retrenchment as manifested in both the South-American Yiddish journal Shriftn and in the Vilna ghetto diary of Zelig Hirsh Kalmanovitch.
