A symposium on the occasion of the publication in English translation of the History of the Yiddish Language. Originally published in 1973 in Yiddish by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and partially translated in 1980, Max Weinreich’s History of the Yiddish Language is a classic of Yiddish scholarship and is the only comprehensive account of the Yiddish language from its origin to the present. Join us as YIVO celebrates the occasion of the full publication of this work. The late Max Weinreich was cofounder of the YIVO Institute in Vilna and one of the world’s most important scholars of the Yiddish language. He completed History of the Yiddish Language, his magnum opus, shortly before his death. The panelists are Neil G. Jacobs, Professor in the Yiddish and Ashkenazic Studies Program of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at The Ohio State University; Robert D. King, Audre and Bernard Rapoport Chair of Jewish Studies and Fellow of the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Texas at Austin; and Kalman Weiser, Silber Family Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at York University (who will speak in Yiddish). Moderator : Paul Glasser, Associate Dean of the Max Weinreich Center.
