On June 10, 2010, YIVO launched the online version of The YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe, www.yivoencyclopedia.org. The program from that evening that is presented here includes remarks by Jonathan Brent, YIVO's executive director; Gershon Hundert, the encyclopedia's editor in chief; and Joseph Steinberg, whose charitable trust is the website's principal sponsor. THE YIVO ENCYCLOPEDIA : A FIRST LOOK 11 March 2008

A panel discussion that celebrated the publication of The YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe by Yale University Press. The panelists served as "first readers," giving their reactions and thoughts about this monumental new scholarly work and its potential impact on the greater community. The panelists were novelist Allegra Goodman, author of Intuition and Kaaterskill Falls; Edward Kasinec, head of the Slavic and Baltic Division at the New York Public Library; Marsha Rozenblit, the Harvey M. Meyerhoff Professor of Jewish History at the University of Maryland; and Leo Spitzer, the Kathe Tappe Vernon Professor of History and former chair of the Jewish Studies Program at Dartmouth University. Editor in Chief Gershon Hundert, professor of history and chair of the Department of Jewish Studies at McGill University, led the panel and responded to the panelists' remarks.

THE YIVO ENCYCLOPEDIA : A CELEBRATION 12 March 2008

	On March 12, 2008, YIVO held an event and reception celebrating the completion and publication of The YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe, a two-volume, 2,500-page reference edited by Gershon Hundert of McGill University. The event emphasized the breadth and diversity of the work’s coverage with a series of brief presentations by scholars associated with the project that led into or included performances, recitations, and readings that served as examples.
