Mattityahu Strashun was a Vilna Talmudist, communal leader, and book collector. He spent a great part of his considerable fortune in collecting a magnificent rabbinics library, took an active interest in public affairs, and was for many years president of the Jewish charities in Vilna. After his death, his library was opened to the public and soon became renowned throughout the Jewish world.
