"Arise and go now to the city of slaughter..."

The Kishinev pogrom inspired both despair and militancy on the part of Russian Jews. "City of Slaughter," which became a rallying cry for Zionists, was penned by Hebrew poet Hayyim Nachman Bialik after a visit to Kishinev in the wake of the pogrom.
