| ABOUT THE SERIES The new YIVO Jewish Culture Series is an educational outreach program designed to introduce various aspects of Eastern Ashkenazic culture and history to the public. The faculty for the series draws on the extensive network of scholars affiliated with the YIVO Institute. | SUNDAY, APRIL 14, 2013 | 2:00pm "A Celebration of the Life and Works of Bronx Native Author, Chaim Grade" Various The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research celebrates the acquisition of Chaim Grade's estate, including his personal papers and library, literary manuscripts, and publication rights. These materials will be permanently housed at YIVO at our world headquarters in New York City and shared with the National Library of Israel. PROGRAM Welcome Yvette Marrin, Chair, Adult Education Committee, Riverdale Temple Rabbi Judith Lewis, Riverdale Temple Remarks Oliver Koppell, New York City Council Introduction Jonathan Brent, Executive Director, YIVO Institute Speaker Curt Leviant, Grade translator and personal friend Reading from My Mother's Sabbath Days by Chaim Grade Hy Wolfe, Artistic Director, National Yiddish Theatre Jonathan Brent Reception —————— CHAIM GRADE was born in 1910 in Vilna, Poland. In his youth, Mr. Grade was a founding member of the Yung-Vilne literary group, known for its leftist politics, secular Jewish thinking and literary influence. After tragically losing both his mother and wife during the Holocaust, he emerged as one of the most prolific and defining Yiddish voices in post-war literature. The power and depth of his works in unparalleled. Besides publishing several volumes of poetry, he is best known for his two acclaimed novels, 'The Agunah' and 'The Yeshiva.' Curt Leviant is a prize-winning author and translator of more than two dozen books, including six critically acclaimed novels. His translations from the Yiddish include Isaac Bashevis Singer's More Stories from My Father's Court and five volumes of Sholem Aleichem collections. He has won the Wallant Award for his fiction and several national and international writing fellowships. A retired Jewish Studies Professor at Rutgers University, he writes for The Nation and The Jewish Daily Forward. Hy Wolfe is an actor, singer and director whose roots are firmly planted in the theatre world. Mr. Wolfe is the Artistic Director of the National Yiddish Theatre, and the Executive Director of CYCO (Central Yiddish Culture Organization). His twenty-five year performing career has taken him from California to New York to Europe where he has acted and sung on stage, screen, television and in concerts, and has performed as well in commercials, voiceovers and video films. |

| MONDAY, MAY 20, 2013 | 1:30pm "YIVO and Recovering the Lost World of East European Jews" Jonathan Brent, Executive Director, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research YIVO was founded in Poland in 1925 by a visionary group of Jewish intellectuals, including Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud, who understood the unique and largely unrecognized impact of Yiddish culture on European civilization. These community leaders were deeply concerned that the culture of East European Jewry was undergoing radical change in a rapidly modernizing world. Communal activists and intellectuals worked tirelessly to collect the records of Jewish communities across Eastern Europe, years before the Holocaust. Now in New York, YIVO has been able, through unusual circumstances, to recover much of its vast archive that had been stolen by the Nazis. Dr. Brent will discuss this remarkable history, as well as the continuing influence of Yiddish culture on other cultures to the present day. |

| The Jewish Heritage Library is a free public library of Jewish culture, open to the public for borrowing. The library covers all aspects of Jewish culture, including Jewish literature, children's books, Israeli literature in Hebrew and in English, Jewish history, and the Holocaust. The library also includes an outstanding international collection of Jewish films on video and DVD. |
