Dear Student, Faculty & Staff Alumni of the Zumer-Program,

The first issue of Zumer in nyu-york,the alumni newsletter for graduates, faculty, and staff of the Uriel Weinreich Program in Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture was published this past summer. Please click here to see Zumer in nyu-york online. There is also a supplementary page online that does not appear in the print version.

NEW! Photographs from Summer Program 2001 can now be viewed online here.

During the 34 years of the zumer-program, over 1,200 students from all over the world have come to New York to participate in discovering and/or deepening a connection with mame-loshn. This experience has provided the impetus for many students to delve more deeply into Yiddish and become actively involved in its preservation and dissemination. Nearly everyone prominent today in the fields of Yiddish scholarship, music, arts, and literature has passed through the zumer-program at some point—as student, teacher, guest lecturer or performer. Many graduates of the program have gone on to teach in the program or elsewhere.

Many zumer-program alumni look to YIVO and to relationships forged during the program to facilitate the sort of exchange necessary to maintain an intellectual community centered on Yiddish. This is especially true for alumni living in areas that have few active Yiddish speakers or Yiddish cultural activities. We hope that Zumer in nyu-york will help build a living connection between graduates and continue the revitalization of a Yiddish-speaking community.

We had an impressive response to our first mailing. Out of approximately 950 questionnaires mailed, we received a total of 191, nearly a 20% return! This is an excellent response for a mailing like this. However, we want to do better. In our last mailing, we weeded out some bad addresses, and now it is time to update them.

If you yourself have not yet done so, please click here to fill out our alumni questionnaire and provide us with all your latest contact information, as well as anything relevant to Yiddish in which you are involved. We're also interested in hearing recollections of your experiences in the zumer-program, of how your time here made a difference to you, of events and activities that have stayed with you. We are preparing another mailing, so please complete the form today!

If the response to the questionnaire is enthusiastic enough, our dream is to publish an alumni directory including contact information (with permission) and other available information about each person. Finally, a network of Yiddish enthusiasts and activists throughout the world!

As the 35th zumer-program approaches, I wish you all a wonderful spring. I look forward to hearing from all of you soon, and to adding your up-to-date information to our growing alumni network. Thanks for taking the time to respond. If you have any questions, I can be reached at ysalant@yivo.cjh.org or 212-294-6138.

Mit di varemste grusn,
Yankl Salant
